Anticipating the arrival of a little one is such an exciting experience. Moms-to-be, like me, make plans (and more plans) on how we will incorporate them into our households. One area of focus that gets a ton of attention is the nursery, as it will become the place where they feed, sleep, play and grow into young individuals.
I myself am looking forward to the arrival of my first child and preparing his nursery. There's just one little setback: I work from home and live in a two bedroom space. Now of course there are various ways I could tackle this spatial planning math equation, but the obvious choice is that my growing little man will have to take over my home office as it offers more space than my bedroom (my husband also happens to work out of our room). In thinking about my nursery/home office interior, the plan now becomes how to turn one room into two functioning spaces.
Whether you are limited on space or find yourself in the same boat, here are some ways to transform your home into a joint nursery.
How to Make a Home Office/Nursery Room
- Keep your color palette neutral. As tempted as you may be to color up your room in juvenile hues, remember that it also serves a second purpose. Keep the overall color palette of the space neutral as it will help unite your nursery and home office together. Especially when working with a smaller space, be careful not to make obvious visual separations that will cause the room to look and feel smaller than it is. Should you want to add color, incorporate it into smaller nursery accents and textiles like crib bedding.
- Focus on the essentials. Remember, you are trying to fit two purposes into one room. As a result, one can only bet that space is a precious and limited commodity. Focus on the essentials by filling the room with must have items. Examples include a crib, dresser (save space with one that comes with a changing table on top), office desk and chair along with other die hard pieces you'll need to function on a daily basis. Should you have more room, feel free to incorporate more but ask yourself if your pieces are an accessory or necessity? The name of the game is creating a clutter-free environment.
- Designate a workspace. Okay so as soon-to-be parents we all want to our children everything, but if your home office is helping to pay the bills - you are going to need a work area. Even with modern innovations like a laptop side table, nothing beats having a surface to call your own. When planning out your nursery, find an area in the room (big or small) that you can designate for your home office. Find a wall that will provide the necessary space for you to put your desk, chair, small filing cabinet and other needs.
- Use your space wisely. Once you have determined areas around your room for nursery and home office items, it's time to plan accordingly. As floor space will more than likely be limited (especially when the little one begins playing on the floor), think about ways to reduce clutter. For example, choose small office furniture pieces like a trash bin and filing cabinet/drawers that can fit under your desk. It's also a good idea to utilize your walls with shelving for both office and nursery needs. Storage bins will become your friend and can be placed inside bookcase pockets to clear up floor space.
